Section IV — The Daily Maintenance Checklist
A simplified version of the Atlas, used every morning
The 200 steps are the deep curriculum. Most days you don't have time for the deep curriculum. You have time for this.
☀️ The four-check morning (5 minutes)
1. Check Hardware
Am I hydrated? Did I sleep? Did I move?
- Hydration: one glass of water before anything else.
- Sleep: did I get enough? If not, lower today's bar.
- Movement: did I move my body yesterday? If not, move it today.
The body is the vessel. You can't do any of this work in a body that isn't running.
2. Check Software
What is my intention for today? (Step 10)
Pick one word. One intention. Not a to-do list. An orientation. "Today is for clarity." "Today is for completion." "Today is for rest." Let the rest of the day filter through that word.
3. Check Connectivity
Have I performed one act of kindness? (Step 77)
Connection is the point. Not performance. Not optimization. Connection — to other humans, to the work, to the moment. If you haven't connected today, you haven't done the day.
4. Check Presence
Am I here, or am I in a story about the past/future?
The only time that exists is now. The morning checklist is itself a practice of presence: you can't check these four without being here. If you notice you've drifted into the story of yesterday or the worry of tomorrow, return. That's the whole practice.
🌙 The four-check evening (3 minutes, before sleep)
A mirror of the morning, run in reverse:
- Did I drink enough water? Top up if not.
- Did I sleep well last night? Will I sleep well tonight? Wind down early if needed.
- Did I move today? Will I move tomorrow? If not, set a 10-minute intention.
- What was my intention? Did I live it? If not, no judgment. Note it. Reset.
📅 The weekly review (15 minutes, once a week)
On the same day each week — pick a day that suits your rhythm — sit for fifteen minutes with these questions:
- What went well? (no false modesty)
- What didn't? (no false contrition)
- What did I avoid?
- What do I want more of?
- What do I want less of?
- What step am I on this week? (from the 200)
- What step do I want to be on next week?
Write the answers. Review the previous week's. Notice the patterns. Adjust gently.
The maintenance is the practice
You don't need an hour of meditation. You need five minutes, every morning, of the four-check. You don't need a weekend retreat. You need one question, every evening, about presence.
The Atlas is not what you do in dramatic moments. It is what you do in ordinary ones, repeatedly, until the ordinary becomes luminous.
